Diarrhea in nursery pigs associated with multiple concurrent pathogens
نویسنده
چکیده
Differential diagnoses for diarrhea in weaned pigs include salmonellosis, swine dysentery, porcine proliferative enteropathy (PPE) caused by Lawsonia intracellularis, rotavirus and coronavirus enteritis, postweaning colibacillosis, trichuriasis, coccidiosis,1 and porcine colonic spirochetosis (PCS) caused by Brachyspira pilosicoli.2 Postweaning diarrhea may be associated with multiple concurrent pathogens,3 frequently with complex interactions among agents in individual animals.3,4 brown, loose to watery, and contained pieces of feed and mucus. Associated risk factors that may have played a role in occurrence of diarrhea include diet, pig movement, sanitation, environment, and rodent control. Clinical management strategies that were instituted addressed some of these risk factors.

Occurrence of diarrhoea and intestinal pathogens in non-medicated nursery pigs
BACKGROUND Intestinal disease in nursery pigs is the most common cause of antibiotic usage in pigs in Denmark. The decision to initiate batch medication of intestinal diseases in nursery pigs is typically made by the stock personnel based on clinical assessments of pigs and counting of diarrhoeic faecal pools on the pen floor. The target population of this study was batches of nursery pigs (10-...
متن کاملA case-control study investigating risk factors associated with postweaning Escherichia coli diarrhea in southern Ontario
Methods: A case-control study involving 50 herds was conducted. Information on hygiene, management, facilities, management of diarrhea, porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) status, and nursery feed management was collected through a questionnaire. Rectal swabs and sera collected from ten weaned pigs in each herd were tested for F4+ (K88+) E coli and antibodies to two vira...
متن کاملIncreased frequency of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus shedding and lesions in suckling pigs compared to nursery pigs and protective immunity in nursery pigs after homologous re-challenge
Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) causes enteric disease in pigs and spreads rapidly after entering naïve pig populations. The objectives were to (1) compare the disease course following inoculation with PEDV isolate US/Colorado/2013 in naïve 10 day and 8 week-old pigs, and (2) contrast the naïve response to homologous challenge in 8 week-old pigs. Pigs were randomly assigned into group 1 ...
متن کاملMultiple etiologies of infectious diarrhea and concurrent infections in a pediatric outpatient-based screening study in Odisha, India
BACKGROUND There are multiple etiologies responsible for infectious gastroenteritis causing acute diarrhea which are often under diagnosed. Also acute diarrhea is one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality among children less than 5 years of age. METHODS In our study, fecal samples (n = 130) were collected from children (<5 years) presenting with symptoms of acute diarrhea. Samples we...
متن کاملEfficacy of dietary supplementation of bacteriophages in treatment of concurrent infections with enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli K88 and K99 in postweaning pigs
Postweaning diarrhea or colibacillosis is a costly disease causing substantial mortality, as well as growth retardation, in swine production.1-3 Colibacillosis is typically associated with avid intestinal adhesion and fecal shedding of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC). The ETEC causing diarrhea in postweaning pigs carries the F4 (K88) or F18 fimbrial antigen in most cases.4-6 The F5 (K99...
